ADHD Support for School-Age Children in Dakar
· par Tutonovas

Searching for ADHD support in Dakar turns up international directories, general medical listings, and school pages that mention ADHD in passing. Very little is written about what actually works here, on the ground.
This page is that missing information.
Assessment options in Senegal
Formal assessment capacity is limited. The country has very few child psychiatrists, and specialist services are concentrated in Dakar.
Practically, families have three routes: a paediatrician who can make an initial evaluation and refer onward; specialist services in Dakar including the child psychiatry unit at Fann Hospital; or private practitioners, some of whom offer English-language consultations — worth asking about specifically.
Expect waiting times. Many international families also pursue assessment during home leave, which is a legitimate option if you travel regularly.
Support doesn't need to wait for a diagnosis
This is the most useful thing on this page. Nearly everything that helps a child with ADHD, structured routines, broken-down tasks, movement breaks, clear visual schedules — is simply good practice. None of it requires a diagnosis, and none of it harms a child who turns out not to have ADHD.
If you're eighteen months from a formal assessment, you don't have to spend eighteen months doing nothing.
What actually helps with schoolwork
From what works consistently with children we support:
Shorten the unit of work. A child who cannot sit for an hour can often manage six focused blocks of ten minutes. Same total, dramatically different outcome.
Make time visible. ADHD frequently involves difficulty sensing time passing. A visual timer changes homework from an open-ended demand into something with a visible end.
Externalise the memory. Working memory is often the real bottleneck, not attention. Checklists, written instructions and visible step-by-step guides remove the need to hold multiple things in mind at once.
Move first. Physical activity before homework, not as a reward after, genuinely improves the session that follows.
Start the hardest thing first, when reserves are highest. Most children do the opposite.
Working with your child's school
Whether or not you have a diagnosis, most teachers will accommodate reasonable, specific requests. Vague ones ("he needs more attention") rarely lead anywhere. Specific ones usually do:
Seating away from windows, doors and high-traffic areas Instructions given one at a time, with a check for understanding A legitimate reason to move, handing out materials, delivering a message Extra time on written assessments A discreet non-verbal signal between teacher and child instead of public correction
Put requests in writing, keep them short, and frame them as things that help the teacher too because they usually do.
The part most guides leave out: your child's self-image
Children with ADHD hear an extraordinary amount of correction. By the time they're eight or nine, many have concluded they are lazy, difficult, or not clever, none of which is true.
This matters more than any technique. A child who believes they're incapable stops trying, and no strategy works on a child who has stopped trying. Naming what's actually happening "your brain works differently, and we're going to find the way that works for you" is not a small intervention.
